Here are the On3 players of the week for Week Five of the 2022 season. Each week, we pick players of the week in each Power 5 conference as well as an overall Group of 5 player of the week.

Everything being equal, more weight is given to big performances against “good” opponents.

ACC

North Carolina QB Drake Maye
The buzz:
Maye continued his torrid start to the season by accounting for five touchdowns as the Tar Heels routed Virginia Tech 41-10. He threw for a career-high 363 yards and three TDs and also rushed for a team-high 73 yards and two more scores. Maye, a redshirt freshman who took over as the starter when Sam Howell turned pro, has accounted for 22 touchdowns and is averaging 369.8 yards of total offense per game for the Tar Heels (4-1).

Big Ten

Ohio State RB Miyan Williams
The buzz:
With TreVeyon Henderson out with a foot injury, Williams more than took up the slack. He rushed for 189 yards and five TDs as the Buckeyes romped past Rutgers 49-10. Williams scored on two 1-yard runs, two 2-yarders and a 70-yarder. Three came in the first half, which ended with Ohio State leading 28-7.

Big 12

TCU QB Max Duggan
The buzz:
For the second week in a row, an opposing quarterback torched Oklahoma’s defense. Last week, it was Kansas State’s Adrian Martinez; this week, it’s Duggan. He accounted for five TDs as the Horned Frogs blasted the Sooners 55-24. Duggan threw for 302 yards and three TDs and also rushed for 116 yards and two scores, including a 67-yard scamper midway through the first quarter that gave TCU a 20-3 lead. The rushing total was the second-highest of his career, and it was the third game in a row he has thrown at least three TD passes. TCU is 4-0 and Duggan has thrown 11 TD passes.

Pac-12

UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson
The buzz:
Thompson-Robinson had played well in the first four games, but the schedule wasn’t overly difficult. The competition increased greatly Friday night, and DTR rose to the occasion. He accounted for four touchdowns as the host Bruins – who were underdogs – downed previously unbeaten Washington 40-32. UCLA built a 40-16 lead before the Huskies made things at least a little bit interesting in the fourth quarter. Thompson-Robinson threw for 234 yards and two TDs in the first half, which ended with the Bruins leading 26-10. He ran for a TD and threw for another score in the third quarter to make it 40-16. UCLA finished with 499 yards, punted once and was 10-of-14 on third down.

SEC

Mississippi State CB Emmanuel Forbes
The buzz:
Forbes made only one tackle, but he still made a huge impact in a 42-24 win over Texas A&M. He blocked a field goal attempt that was returned for a TD in the third quarter and had a pick-six himself late in the game. He also had another interception as well as a pass breakup as the Bulldogs moved to 4-1.

Group of 5

East Carolina WR C.J. Johnson
The buzz:
Johnson had seven catches for 194 yards and four touchdowns in a 48-28 win over USF. He had three touchdown receptions, covering 148 yards, in the first half, which ended with ECU leading 41-7. Johnson went into the game with 15 receptions and two touchdowns this season. The yardage total was the second-highest of his career; he had an epic 12-catch, 283-yard outing as a true freshman against Cincinnati in 2019.
