College Football Playoff: ESPN predicts 2024 12-team bracket, full bowl slate after Week 2
College football has a second full week of results after the schedule of games yesterday. With that, ESPN has updated what the postseason will now look like, including the field for the 2024 College Football Playoff.
Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach gave the newest selections for each of the bowls. All 11 games for this year’s playoff were included along with the 36 remaining bowls across the country. Some saw some obvious changes while portions of the selections remained the same.
Here’s how the playoff picture looks based on the latest from Bonagura and Schlabach earlier today.

College Football Playoff: First-round game #1
Bonagura: No. 12 Boise State at No. 5 Texas
Schlabach: No. 12 Memphis at No. 5 Texas
One of the opening-round games will kick off from The 40 Acres. That’s after the Texas Longhorns, who were at least or likely the runner-up out of the Southeastern Conference, earn a second consecutive berth.
However, the opponent that’ll travel to Austin as the mid-major bid varies for the two writers at ESPN. Bonagura has it as Boise State out of the Mountain West while Schlabach has it as Memphis out of the American.
College Football Playoff: First-round game #2
Bonagura: No. 11 Penn State at No. 6 Alabama
Schlabach: No. 11 Kansas State at No. 6 Ole Miss
The second matchup of the playoff will at least be hosted by someone out of the SEC. The sixth seeds that’ll play that game as well as their respective elevens will be different though.
For Bonagura, it’s a trip to Tuscaloosa to play Alabama for Penn State out of the Big Ten. For Schlabach, it’s a trip to The ‘Sip to meet Ole Miss for Kansas State from the Big 12.
College Football Playoff: First-round game #3
Bonagura: No. 10 Missouri at No. 7 Ole Miss
Schlabach: No. 10 Alabama at No. 7 Tennessee
The seven-ten meetings are an all conference affair for both at ESPN. All four teams selected vary between the two.
Bonagura has Ole Miss hosting Missouri this team with them not meeting earlier this season. However, Schlabach has an exact rematch of the Third Saturday in October with Alabama going back to Rocky Top after playing Tennessee earlier in the year.
College Football Playoff: First-round game #4
Bonagura: No. 9 Oregon at No. 8 USC
Schlabach: No. 9 Oregon at No. 8 Penn State
Both Bonagura and Schlabach have Oregon as their No. 9 seed in the College Football Playoff. The travel to play their opponent, each of who are in the conference yet ones that they don’t play earlier in the fall, will be a lot different for either one.
One has the Ducks going just a little south for a Big Ten rematch between them and USC. One then has them going cross country again for a game in Happy Valley against the Nittany Lions.
CFP Quarterfinal at the Fiesta Bowl
Bonagura: No. 5 Texas vs. No. 4 Utah
Schlabach: No. 5 Texas vs. No. 4 Utah
Both at ESPN have Texas advancing past Boise State and Memphis respectively to play in the Fiesta Bowl. In that game, the Longhorns will meet their winner of the Big 12 Championship in the Utah Utes.
Texas left the conference by the time that Utah arrived over this offseason. Still, only one will be on from here to the semifinals after this game in Salt Lake City.
CFP Quarterfinal at the Peach Bowl
Bonagura: No. 6 Alabama vs. No. 3 Miami
Schlabach: No. 6 Alabama vs. No. 3 Miami
Bonagura and Schlabach agreed again about the Peach Bowl. Each has ‘Bama advancing as their six seeds to go on and play the victor of the ACC Championship in the Miami Hurricanes.
Even so, they’re split on which one advances on into one of the final four spots in the playoff.
CFP Quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl Game
Bonagura: No. 7 Ole Miss vs. No. 2 Ohio State
Schlabach: No. 7 Tennessee vs. No. 2 Ohio State
It’ll be an SEC-Big Ten meeting for each of these experts with The Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Bonagura has the Rebels going out west while Schlaback has the Volunteers. Each will then meet the winner of the Big 12 Championship in the Ohio State Buckeyes.
CFP Quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl
Bonagura: No. 8 USC vs. No. 1 Georgia
Schlabach: No. 8 Penn State vs. No. 1 Georgia
The Sugar Bowl will then also be SEC vs. Big Ten.
Georgia, the winner of the SEC Championship, will be the No. 1 overall seed in each of their brackets this season. Bonagura has them then meeting the Trojans while Schlabach has them playing against the Nittany Lions.
CFP Semifinal at the Orange Bowl
Bonagura: No. 5 Texas vs. No. 1 Georgia
Schlabach: No. 5 Texas vs. No. 1 Georgia
In the first semifinal with the Orange Bowl, both Bonagura and Schlabach have their second rematch from prior in this season.
Georgia and Texas will play a top-ranked matchup inside DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium on October 19th with them likely playing a rematch in the SEC Championship from Atlanta. This would then be the third meeting with one advancing on to play for the national title.
CFP Semifinal at the Cotton Bowl Classic
Bonagura: No. 6 Alabama vs. No. 2 Ohio State
Schlabach: No. 3 Miami vs. No. 2 Ohio State
The second semifinal in the Cotton Bowl will feature the Ohio State Buckeyes as the No. 2 seed. Whether they play another top-four seed or an at-large, though, depends on the writer.
Bonagura has the Buckeyes playing Alabama in Arlington. Schlabach instead has them meeting The ‘U for a final spot in the championship game.
CFP National Championship
Bonagura: No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 1 Georgia
Schlabach: No. 2 Ohio State vs. No. 1 Georgia
Through two weeks of games, nothing has changed for Bonagura or Schlabach for the final game of the season in the College football Playoff.
Both at ESPN have Georgia and Ohio State playing for the title later this year in Houston. While Bonagura didn’t provide a pick in his analysis, Schlaback picked the ‘Dawgs to win that game as the eventual national champion for the third time in four seasons.
