Colorado offers Michigan State 4-star QB commit Kayd Coffman

Colorado’s pursuit of a quarterback in the 2025 cycle was well-documented, as head coach Deion Sanders and the Buffaloes targeted Carrollton (Ga.) four-star Julian Lewis and eventually flipped him from USC.
Could Sanders and his staff flip another blue-chip signal-caller in the 2026 cycle? On Wednesday, the Big 12 program sent out an offer of note.
East Kentwood (Mich.) four-star QB Kayd Coffman committed to Michigan State on Feb. 7 and has since seen his stock rise ahead of his senior season. The top in-state Spartans pledge announced via X that he’s been offered by CU:
Coffman has remained locked in with Sparty. He did visit Ohio State last month after earning MVP honors at an Under Armour showcase in the Buckeye State, though Ryan Day’s program is yet to extend an offer. With a big 2025 campaign expected, Coffman is turning heads.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder caught up with On3’s SpartanMag in April, reaffirming his pledge to Michigan State. He’s been to East Lansing numerous times throughout his recruitment and is the linchpin of head coach Jonathan Smith’s class to date.
“I was able to go to so many (practices) that I have built relationships with those guys in the (quarterback) room,” Coffman said. “It has been really nice to see how they operate, how they do stuff. I think we are in a really good spot after this spring.”
Coffman is now the No. 14 QB in the 2026 On300. He ranks No. 273 overall and No. 19 at QB in the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s currently the highest-ranked of the four commits in Michigan State’s class, as of May 7.

“I definitely think it felt right,” Coffman told On3’s Steve Wiltfong about his commitment. “I’ve been thinking about it since November when they offered. I’ve been thinking about that and praying on it and how I see myself fitting in there. I think we can do special things and that made me excited and made me want to get on board.”
More on Colorado Recruiting
To date, CU has one commit in its 2026 class: Calabasas (Calif.) JUCO EDGE Domata Peko Jr., the son of new Buffs DL coach Domata Peko.
As has become custom during the Sanders tenure in Boulder, CU recruiting picked up some serious steam late in the 2025 cycle. The Buffaloes inked 14 high school prospects, putting together the nation’s No. 35 class, according to the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings.
The biggest win came at the end of November when Lewis flipped to the Buffs from USC. He closed as the No. 7 QB in the cycle and will compete for the starting job as a true freshman this fall.
Lewis was one of seven four-stars to sign with Colorado, along with the likes of four-star offensive tackle Carde Smith, Merritt, four-star wide receiver Quentin Gibson and four-star IOL Chauncey Gooden.
