Most conferences have begun league play, and this weekend delivered some very unexpected results. SEC play got underway this past weekend, and the results, along with those from the rest of the country, have led to some big shakeups in D1Baseball’s latest top 25 rankings.

Some intriguing matchups were on the SEC’s opening weekend slate. No. 5 Florida won two out of three against No. 24 Alabama, while No. 1 LSU won two out of three against No. 15 Texas A&M. But the real surprises came elsewhere in the top five. No. 2 Tennessee hit the road for a trip to Missouri, and came back home without a single win. Missouri completed the three-game sweep, and No. 6 Vanderbilt did the same against No. 3 Ole Miss. Vanderbilt went 4-0 on the week, compared to 0-4 for Ole Miss.

No. 11 TCU also struggled this week, losing in midweek action to Texas State before dropping two out of three at Oklahoma. No. 12 Oklahoma State went 2-2 on the week, falling twice over the weekend against No. 22 Texas Tech. That completed a 4-1 week for the Red Raiders.

No. 17 Virginia Tech came out of the week without a single win, dropping all three games on the road against a Miami team on the fringe of the top 25 rankings from D1Baseball. No. 23 NC State struggled again as well, going 1-3 on the week which included a 1-2 weekend record against No. 14 Virginia. Additionally, No. 25 Southern Miss had a 2-2 week, which included going 1-2 at Texas State over the weekend.

If this weekend taught us anything, it’s that the race to Omaha is wide open at this point in the season. There’s a lot of baseball left to be played, but this weekend set up what could become a rollercoaster final months of the regular season.
