Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy attempted to walk back comments by team owner Jerry Jones on the quarterback situation between Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush on Friday.

Jones said he would travel to New York by foot if it meant Rush played so well a quarterback controversy was on the horizon.

“Jerry Jones wouldn’t mind a QB controversy between Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush,” tweeted Jon Machota of The Athletic. “He said he’d walk to New York if it meant Rush played so well going forward that the Cowboys had a tough decision to make.”

On Friday, McCarthy made it clear he doesn’t believe there will be a quarterback battle, no matter how well Rush plays.

“Clearly, everybody in our locker room and everybody in the building, Jerry included, Dak is our quarterback,” McCarthy said, via Machota. “We want Cooper to be as successful as possible. So, I think it stops right there.”

Jones is known for his off-the-cuff comments but the Cowboys head coach doesn’t believe there’s reason for any drama.

Jerry Jones compares Prescott-Rush to Prescott-Romo situation

Despite McCarthy’s indignation, Jones said it’s certainly possible for Prescott to see his starting gig evaporate from his hands in favor of Rush. He compared the current situation to what Tony Romo faced when he lost his starting job to the Mississippi State alum.

“Of course we want Dak to be here next week. … But Dak and I want Rush to lead the team to a victory here and get another win, and that’s the only way to look at it. Looking back when Dak was playing instead of Tony, it was game by game. .. It was actually play by play, almost series by series,” stated Jones, via Machota. “So do I think that it’s possible for Rush to come in here and play at a level the way Prescott did when he took over for Romo? Yes I do. Yes I do. I certainly think that’s possible.”
