Dallas Cowboys rookie Kelvin Joseph left Sunday’s preseason contest against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a left groin injury. The 2021 second round pick did not return.

Joseph played one season with the Kentucky Wildcats after beginning his college career with LSU. He finished 2020 with four interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. He helped them to a 5-5 finish and a Gator Bowl victory against NC State.

The Dallas Cowboys selected him with the 44th overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft.

Jacksonville won the game Sunday by score of 34-14. The loss dropped Dallas to 0-4 on the preseason. The Cowboys open the regular season on Sept. 9 against Tampa Bay.

Joseph tweeted after the game that the injury is minor and he will be “back and better.”

The Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native also tweeted that his thoughts are with those in the state right now. Hurricane Ida made landfall in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon. The New Orleans Saints have already evacuated and canceled their preseason game against Arizona that was scheduled for Saturday.

President Joe Biden signed a declaration of emergency for the state of Louisiana on Sunday.

Tulane relocated its football team to Birmingham, Alabama to continue practice. The Green Wave have a home contest against Oklahoma scheduled for Saturday. The Sooners released a statement Friday evening saying the game is not yet canceled. However, given the state of things in New Orleans, it appears unlikely to happen there.

It’s clear Joseph is thinking of those he knew at LSU and growing up in Baton Rough right now.

“Prayers for the folks in the bad weather,” he said.

The Saints are actually staying in Dallas at the moment as they wait for the storm to pass through. Hopefully they are able to return home safely soon. And hopefully the rookie is able to recover from his injury and make an impact for the Dallas Cowboys defense.
