The Dallas Cowboys and Odell Beckham, Jr. have been flirting with each other for a number of months now. There were recent reports earlier in the week that after bringing in OBJ for a physical, that the Cowboys had concerns about Beckham and that his torn ACL has not progressed the way they would have hoped. According to ESPN’s Jan Slater, there were “serious concerns about his ability to play this season.”

Then on Thursday afternoon, Jon Machota of The Athletic provided another update on Beckham which makes it sound like the Cowboys are still keeping their options open with the wide receiver.

Stephen Jones spoke about Beckham on 105.3 The Fan: “It’s part of the process. Certainly a lot of unknowns when you’re working with a player coming off a major injury. I thought (our visit) was productive.” Is there still a chance the Cowboys sign him? “Yeah, I wouldn’t rule anything out right now,” Jones said.

The last time we saw Beckham on the field, he suffered the torn ACL in the first half of Super Bowl 56. Still, the former first-rounder was able to make a splash during his short time with the Los Angeles Rams last season.

In 12 total games for the Rams (regular season and playoffs), Beckham hauled in 48 catches for 593 yards and scored 7 touchdowns, second only to Cooper Kupp during that time.

Cowboys’ concerns linger on Beckham’s recovery

Slater was not the only reporter at ESPN to catch wind of the Cowboys’ waning interest following Beckham’s visit.

ESPN’s Ed Werder shared a report from a source that revealed Beckham is still questionable to contribute for the remainder of the season.

“The #Cowboys have concerns after Odell Beckham Jr.’s physical that his recovery from torn left ACL in Super Bowl has not progressed enough to ensure he would play before mid-January and possibility exists signing him would have no benefit until 2023 season,” Werder tweeted on Tuesday.

Part of the visit was a health checkup at the Star facility with head athletic trainer Jim Maurer and director of rehabilitation Britt Brown.

The 30-year-old receiver is coming back from a second ACL tear in the past two seasons, leaving many, including the Cowboys, to wonder how healthy he currently is.

Although the team has taken flyers on players with questionable injury situations in the past, as Slater points out, they had inside info on those players, like Michael Gallup and Jaylon Smith.

“Cowboys have rolled the dice on players with injury concerns,” Slater tweeted. “Jaylon Smith comes to mind but remember his surgery was performed by Cowboys team doctor Dr. Dan Cooper. So they felt they had a handle on that situation and plenty of information.”
