Dan Radakovich calls out CFP selection committee for ranking Notre Dame above Miami

The regular season is over, and the politicking for spots in the College Football Playoff field has begun. That includes from Miami Hurricanes athletic director Dan Radakovich, who openly wrote about the team’s situation in his newsletter this week.

In particular, Radakovich called out how Notre Dame is ranked compared to Miami. After all, the two did play a game against one another, which the Hurricanes won, but it’s the Irish who have consistently been ahead of Miami in the CFP rankings.

“I served on the CFP committee for four years, so I know firsthand what a difficult job it is,” Dan Radakovich wrote. “You spend weeks ranking teams, discussing strengths and weaknesses, parsing through data points and — more importantly — watching games. Remember those two loss teams I mentioned? We beat one of them.”

In the opening CFP rankings, Notre Dame was ranked No. 10 while Miami sat at No. 18. At that point in the season, the Hurricanes had hit a cold spell while the Irish were hitting their stride, though both are two loss teams with relatively similar resumes overall. In the most recent rankings, Notre Dame is No. 9 and Miami is No. 12. That’s despite their head-to-head result.

“I was there — many of you were, too. It was an electric night at Hard Rock Stadium when Miami defeated Notre Dame to kickstart this terrific season. Moments like that are what makes college football such a compelling sport. Let’s ensure those moments matter,” Radakovich concluded.

The penultimate CFP rankings are set to come out on Tuesday. Both Notre Dame and Miami won’t have another game to further boost their resumes. So, it’s hard to imagine conference championship weekend will change much of anything.

Mario Cristobal emphatic that Miami is a College Football Playoff team after win over Pittsburgh

Miami added a win over Pitt to wrap up the regular season. The Panthers were ranked at the time the two played and, after the game, head coach Mario Cristobal shared that he emphatically believes that Miami is a Playoff team this season.

“This is a College Football Playoff team. I think we’ve all seen it. … Complete dominance. A team that had great players in all phases, and we’re playing great football in all phases,” Cristobal said. “The best part about football? You get to settle it on the field where head-to-head is always the number one criteria regarding anything athletics and football.”

Again, the reference to head-to-head is a slight at Notre Dame. Of course, both Notre Dame and Miami need to worry about more programs than one another in a very crowded race.
