Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White approached New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston following a horse collar tackle which caused a severe knee injury. After the game, Winston’s former teammate revealed his post-injury conversation and details on his relationship with the veteran quarterback.

“I went up, tapped him on the head and said, ‘I hate that this happened to you, man. Because you’re playing good ball and just praying for you,’” White said, via ESPN’s Jenna Laine. “Because, man, Jameis is a good guy. He’s a great guy. I’m gonna put an emphasis on that. All last year when they was playing and we was playing, he was texting – I don’t know if he was texting everybody, but me and him was close.”

He continued: “When I came in, he kinda showed me around – and just telling me how proud he was of me. Even when we won a Super Bowl, he was one of the first texts, like, ‘Congratulations, man. I wish I could be a part of that, but y’all deserve it. You put a lot of work in, and we always talked about how special you all could be.’ He’s a great guy. You hate to see that happen. I hope it’s not serious, man. I’m just praying for him. But it’s a long season [I] hope he can come back and fight with his team.”

Devin White and Jameis Winston played together for one season, separating in 2020. The Buccaneers added future Hall of Famer Tom Brady, making Winston an expendable asset. The former No. 1 overall pick landed in New Orleans as Drew Brees’ heir, taking the starting job this season.

Jameis Winston injury

According to New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, starting quarterback Jameis Winston suffered a “significant” knee injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The injury occurred early in the second quarter, and left Winston on crutches postgame.

Jameis Winston will likely undergo further tests on the knee injury over the coming week, but many fear bad news. NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport called the injury a “potentially season-ending situation.”

Following the injury, Winston had to be helped off the field following an awkward horse collar tackle. He was taken for evaluation in the blue medical tent on the sideline. The medical staff held Winston in the tent for a long time as a motorized cart waited outside. Teammates Alvin Kamara and Terron Armstead were also seen walking into the tent to check on him.

“An apparent ACL injury, as well as potential damage to the MCL,” Rapaport later tweeted.
