Gladewater (Texas) High four-star receiver DJ Allen is staying in-state to play for Gary Patterson and the TCU Horned Frogs.

Allen, who is the No. 141 player in the On300 and the No. 19 receiver in the country, announced his commitment to the Horned Frogs Friday afternoon on social media.

Allen, who is listed at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, picked the Horned Frogs over offers from more than 20 schools. He took official visits to Arkansas, Baylor and USC before picking TCU. He named the Horned Frogs, Hogs, Bears and Trojans as his finalists on July 1.

After Allen’s decision, Patterson tweeted his approval of the commitment.

DJ Allen is one of the most versatile athletes in the Lone Star State.

He plays four different sports – football, basketball, baseball and track. Allen has a 100-meter dash time of 10.82 seconds. In football, he was the Class 3A District 6 most valuable player as a junior. He was a first-team all-district selection as a sophomore.

Allen had 1,316 yards receiving and 17 touchdown catches in 2020. He also added 125 rushing yards and two scores on the ground.

DJ Allen was recruited by TCU outside receivers coach Malcolm Kelly, who himself was a coveted recruit coming out of East Texas in the 2005 Class. Kelly signed with the Sooners out of Longview High and is now recruiting for the Horned Frogs.

DJ Allen’s commitment gives the Horned Frogs pledges from two talented receiver prospects. Matthew Golden of Houston Klein Cain is another four-star recruit heading to Fort Worth. Golden ranks as the nation’s No. 71 player and is the eighth-ranked receiver in the country.

Scouting Allen

On3 national analyst Charles Power is a big fan of DJ Allen and the TCU receiver class.

“The two things that immediately jump out about DJ Allen are his production and athleticism,” Power said. “He dominated 3A football in Texas in 2020 with 59 catches for 1,316 yards and 17 touchdowns in just 10 games.

“He is dangerous as a vertical threat and shows the ability to win in contested situations. The ball skills check out in the camp setting as well. Allen’s on-field speed is validated on the track, where he ran the 100 meters in 10.82 seconds this spring. He’s not a smaller receiver either – measuring 5-foot-11, 190 pounds this spring. TCU now has two athletic, tough and productive On300 receivers committed in Allen and Golden.”
