Indiana finds itself down three points early on the road against Maryland. They are doing so without top wide receiver Elijah Sarratt, who is spending more time in the medical tent than on the field. CBS sideline reporter Jenny Dell provided an update as the Hoosiers were driving late in the first quarter, still trying to figure out the exact problem.

“Elijah Sarratt is now in the injury tent for the second time since this game started,” Dell said. “I’m trying to figure out what exactly is going on. I’ll update you as soon as I know. But he is not out on the field.”

Shortly after, CBS showed a replay to possibly explain what happened to Sarratt. He slowed up after running a route and was grabbing at the back of his right leg. The broadcast speculated Sarratt’s hamstring might be the issue, not what you want to hear for a wide receiver.

Due to the injury, Sarratt does not have a catch on the day. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza started things out with an interception, eventually leading to a Maryland field goal. Mendoza might not have one of his top guys, but you know head coach Curt Cignetti will emphasize limiting mistakes.

Indiana holds an 8-0 overall record and controls its own destiny when it comes to the Big Ten Championship Game and College Football Playoff.

Update: Elijah Surratt officially dealing with tight hamstring

Coming into the second quarter, Dell caught up with Cignetti. In a report a few moments later, Dell revealed it’s a tight hamstring for Sarratt. There is positive news, though, as he is expected to get back in the game.

“I talked to Coach Cignetti there,” Dell said. “Elijah Surratt is dealing with a tight hamstring. They just put a black wrap around his right thigh. So, he’s hoping he can get back in there.”

Sarratt entered the day with the most receiving touchdowns in all of college football, 10. Those come on 45 receptions, also adding 609 yards. An average of 13.5 yards per catch is about as good as it gets — proving to be a key part of Indiana’s offense.

Just in case there are long-term implications, Indiana heads on the road next Saturday. A trip to Happy Valley might have brought a good bit of excitement during the preseason. However, Penn State finds itself in the middle of a transition period for the program.
