Tragedy struck in Texas on Saturday, when a youth football coach was shot and later died following an incident at a youth football game in Lancaster. Former Kansas Jayhawks and NFL star Aqib Talib was at the scene while his brother, Yaqub, is being sought by police in connection to the killing and currently has a warrant out for his arrest, according to TMZ.

“Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life,” Aqib Talib’s lawyer said in a statement to TMZ. “He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.”

An argument appeared to have broken out on the field, which led to a large scrum. Eventually, shots were fired in the crowd and a man identified as a local youth coach was struck and later died due to his injuries. A video of the incident later emerged, which led to many to speculate on the possible involvement of Talib.

The Lancaster police department released a statement on Sunday, describing exactly what happened in the altercation. Yaqub has also been identified as the person in question, confirming there is a warrant out for his arrest.

“Upon arrival, officers were notified of a disagreement among coaching staff and the officiating crew,” the statement read. “During the disagreement the opposing coaching staff were involved with physical altercation and one of the individuals in the altercation discharged a firearm striking one male adult. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced deceased.

“Officers have identified the suspect involved in this offense as a black male, Yaqub Salik Talib and there is an active warrant for his arrest.”

Talib played 12 seasons in the NFL

As a defensive back at Kansas, Talib produced at a high level. In three years with the Jayhawks, he totaled 162 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 13 interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns. He was then selected with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Talib spent the first four full years of his NFL career in Tampa Bay, before being traded to the New England Patriots during the 2012 season. He spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons there before joining the Denver Broncos in 2014. There, Talib spent four years before being traded to the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent the final two years of his career in 2018 and 2019.
