Report: Former Texas receiver Joshua Moore not expected to play at SMU in 2022
It’s a good thing the SMU Mustangs have been loading up on transfer portal additions because one of their new additions is no longer planning to hit the Hilltop for this fall. Former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Joshua Moore will not enroll at SMU, according to Dallas Morning News reporter Joseph Hoyt.
“Been hinting at it in some previous stories, but multiple sources indicate former Texas WR Joshua Moore is not expected to come to SMU,” Hoyt tweeted. “Helps explain why SMU added two transfer WRs this week in former Texas WR Kelvontay Dixon and former Miss. State WR Teddy Knox.”
The Yoakum, Texas, native originally committed to Texas Tech, then changed his mind and announced he would play for new Mustangs head coach Rhett Lashlee.
Moore came into the 2021 season as the leading returning receiver for Texas and was waiting to explode under new head coach Steve Sarkisian. He was able to haul in 24 catches for 265 receiving yards and three touchdown catches on the year.
Moore decided to enter the portal on Nov. 8, just two days after a blowout loss to Iowa State on the road. The wide receiver appeared in 24 games during his four seasons in Austin.
In On3’s transfer portal rankings, Moore was the No. 16 wide receiver in the cycle.
Moore was a top 100 recruit coming out of high school, being ranked the No. 96 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus. He was the No. 16 player at the wide receiver position and No. 9 within the state of Texas.
SMU adds former Texas wide out Kelvontay Dixon
Former Texas wide receiver Kelvontay Dixon announced his commitment to SMU after an unofficial visit on Sunday, giving Rhett Lashlee and the Mustangs a new offensive weapon for 2022. Dixon entered the NCAA Transfer Portal last month right before the May 1 deadline to be immediately eligible.
The Mustangs beat out Auburn and Texas Tech, among others, for the 6-foot-0, 182-pound wideout. This is Dixon’s first transfer so he’ll be able to play right away with three years of eligibility remaining.
Kelvontay Dixon, a 2020 signee out of Carthage High in East Texas, played in 15 games over two seasons at Texas. He made three receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown, making one start. Out of high school, he committed and signed to play for the Longhorns over offers from Arkansas and Houston.
Dixon was a four-star prospect and a top-50 recruit in the Lone Star State. He ranked No. 318 in the nation in the 2020 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
Rhett Lashlee is taking full advantage of the transfer portal in his first offseason as the Mustangs’ head coach. Dixon is the third transfer from Texas to commit to SMU in the last week.
