Report: Former Texas star Marquise Goodwin signs with Seattle Seahawks
Former Texas Longhorns star wide receiver Marquise Goodwin has reportedly found a new home in the NFL. According to The Athletic’s Michael-Shawn Dugar, Goodwin is expected to sign with the Seattle Seahawks.
“The Seahawks will fill their open roster spot with WR Marquise Goodwin, I’m told,” Dugar tweeted. “Goodwin, 31, would add speed to the room. Vertical threat at a time when Pete wants to launch it deep with whoever plays QB. Goodwin had 20 catches for 313 yards and 1 TD with the Bears last season.”
Goodwin first entered the league when the Buffalo Bills drafted him in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Texas. He played sparingly in four years with the Bills, bringing in just 49 receptions for 780 yards and six touchdowns. Goodwin joined the San Francisco 49ers in 2017, and turned into a more consistent offensive weapon. With the 49ers, Goodwin totaled 91 receptions for 1,543 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 17 yards per catch.
Last season, Goodwin played for the Chicago Bears. He played in 14 games with two stars, totaling 20 receptions for 313 yards and one touchdown.
Overall, Goodwin has caught 160 passes on 320 targets in his eight-year NFL career, going for 2,636 yards and 14 touchdowns. Goodwin’s best asset is his speed, and he has averaged 16.5 yards per reception in his professional career.
Goodwin is the latest of a few changes to the Seahawks offense
The Seahawks have DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett set in stone as their top two wide receivers, but beyond them, there are questions. Seattle also has Freddie Swain and a couple of other options, but there is nobody proven beyond those receivers.
Adding Goodwin will add a downfield threat and a veteran presence to a Seahawks offense that will look completely different next season. The Seahawks traded away quarterback Russell Wilson in the offseason, and acquired Drew Lock in the deal. Tight end Noah Fant was also brought in as part of that trade.
Lock will compete with Geno Smith for the starting quarterback job for the Seahawks. Adding depth on offense is never a bad thing, but Goodwin’s addition could become a big one down the stretch next season.
The Seahawks are coming off of a disappointing 7-10 2021 season.
