Watching Boston College upset Clemson last week got me thinking. Sometimes, all some players need to take off is simply an expanded role. On the one hand, Clemson’s best player is senior Hunter Tyson. Coming into this season, Tyson averaged 15.4 minutes per game over his four years; this year, he is averaging 35.1 minutes and pushing for first-team All-ACC honors.

On the other hand, Boston College’s best player is Quinten Post. The 7-foot-0 senior is averaging 16.5 points in 26.2 minutes played this season. Post is a transfer from Mississippi State, where he played 7.4 minutes per game through two seasons and 39 games.

Understanding that not all circumstances are built the same, both of these players, under different circumstances, found themselves with expanded roles, and they have thrived.

At this point in the season, most college programs have their rotations and lineups set. Teams are settled into making a run or simply finishing strong and building for next year.
