New York Giants receiver Collin Johnson is out for the season after suffering an ACL tear at Wednesday’s practice, the team confirmed. Johnson went down during drills and had to be carted off the field.

A fifth-round pick in 2020, Johnson played his college football at Texas. He finished his college career with 2,624 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns across four seasons. He spent his rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars, finishing with 18 catches for 272 yards and two touchdowns before being cut at the end of the season and signing with the Giants.

Johnson appeared in 12 games for New York this past season, totaling 11 catches for 105 yards. He led the Giants in receiving during their preseason opener this year against New England with seven catches for 82 yards. He followed that up with a three-catch, 41-yard performance in the second preseason contest against Cincinnati.

Johnson had been getting snaps with the first team this preseason and seemed to have a shot at a larger role in 2022. However, with the unfortunate news of his injury, he will now have to wait until next year to get another chance.

Even with news on Collin Johnson, the Giants still have a number of receivers ready to step up this season. They selected former Kentucky receiver Wan’Dale Robinson in the 2022 NFL Draft, and also return leading receiver Kenny Golladay as well as last year’s first-round pick Kadarius Toney. They also have a healthy Daniel Jones after the quarterback missed the last six games of 2021 because of a neck injury.

The Giants will close out the preseason at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday with a matchup against the New York Jets. After that, they are scheduled to kick off the regular season at 4:25 p.m. ET on Sept. 11 against the Tennessee Titans.
