John Metchie was the latest Alabama wide receiver to make the jump to the NFL, getting selected by the Houston Texans in the second round. Even though he is rehabbing a torn ACL suffered in the SEC Championship, the hope is that Metchie will be able to play at some point during the 2022 regular season.

Contract details for the rookie wide receiver were released on Monday, with Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network having the full rundown. Metchie is scheduled to get a decent chunk of guaranteed money as the total contract is worth just over $8 million.

“John Metchie III (Texans) $8.07 million, $3.049 million signing bonus, salaries $705,000 (fully gtd), $1.071 million (fully gtd), $1.438 million ($800,000 gtd), $1.805 million,” Wilson said.

Metchie was one of the top receivers for Alabama last season, having 96 receptions, 1,142 yards, and eight touchdowns while averaging 11.9 yards per reception. Never being a true No. 1 target inside of the offense, once healthy, Metchie will have the opportunity to do so with the Texans.

However, getting back to full strength will be the top priority for him and the organization. Even with how common torn ACLs are these days, making sure recovery goes well is important. With the nice contract Houston is giving their second-round pick, making sure he’s 100% will be at the top of their minds.

John Metchie gives update on health after ACL tear

Prior to the 2022 NFL Draft, Metchie gave a positive update regarding his health after tearing his ACL. He said by the time July rolls around, he will be back to playing football and it will be “full-go.”

“As far as the recovery, I will be good to play football in July,” Metchie said. “I will be good to go, no training wheels. I have been running already for the last couple months. Cutting, jumping, doing all those types of things. When I say I will be ready to go in July, it’s full-go football.”

The wide receiver gave a similar update after being drafted by the Texans. During an interview, Metchie said everything has been going well and he’s just excited to get back onto the field.

“Yeah, I feel great in that department,” Metchie said. “My knee’s been doing really well. I’ve always been ahead of schedule, really ahead of schedule for where I am. I’m just excited, just ready to get back. It’s been doing well, no worries there. No speed bumps or hurdles. So it’s been good.”
