The Iowa Hawkeyes will be hitting the road again, traveling to East Lansing to face Michigan State on Thursday evening. Traditionally, the Spartans have been a tough foe, particularly in their own building.

Will the Hawkeyes have Patrick McCaffery back in the fold and on the court for this game?

His father, head coach Fran McCaffery, says that while his son will be back on the court eventually this season, it’s still up in the air as to whether he plays in this game.

“That will be determined at game time. He is still practicing and doing better,” Fran McCaffery said via Zoom on Wednesday. “He is doing everything that everyone else is doing now. I think his conditioning should be ok whenever he decides to play.”

Regardless of whether he plays or not, his older brother, Connor, will likely remain in the starting lineup. Iowa will need strong guard play against Michigan State as they try to keep their backcourt in check. That group is led by their leading scorer, Tyson Walker, who is averaging 14.3 points per game and point guard A.J. Hoggard, who is handing out six assists a contest.

“He (Walker) is playing as well as anyone I have seen on tape. He is scoring at a high clip and he is also a late game shot maker,” McCaffery said.

The Iowa head coach also cited the strong play of Hoggard, who he said has made the leap to become an elite player this season.
