Last year, the Seahawks All-Pro safety Jamal Adams basically played the season with one arm, according to Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll. In the team’s first game last against the Atlanta Falcons, Adams hyperextended his elbow, dislocated two fingers, and dislocated his shoulder.

He spent the majority of the season with his arm in a sling, which limited his mobility.

Coach Carroll on Adams’ first year

At Friday’s practice, head coach Pete Carroll told reporters what it was like watching Adams play last year with one arm.

“I was watching some cut up this morning and was watching him play with one arm last year,” Carroll told reporters on Friday. “He made a sack and knocked a ball down with one arm down by his side. I’m so grateful that he’s not playing like that anymore. It’s hard to imagine a guy playing football really with one arm. That’s what he was doing, and he did an admirable job to get that done. He’s healthy and ready to go so if we can keep him on the good side of that then it’s going to be really exciting to watch because he’s a really difficult player to deal with.”

Carroll is eager to see the production his safety can put out with two good arms this season. Even without the use of one, he still had a good year. Adams finished with 83 tackles, 59 were solo, 9.5 sacks, three passes deflected, and one forced fumble. Adams’ efforts did not go unnoticed as the Seahawks gave him a four-year, $70 million extension with $38 million guaranteed. That contract has made him the NFL’s highest-paid safety.

The potential for this season

Carroll continued on with the possibilities and expectations for Adams heading into the season.

“It’s going to be kind of a rolling ball of information coming at us, we will take the info and see what we show and what he’s done, and then continue. There’s nothing that we can’t do but we can’t do everything at the same time,” Carroll said. “The pallet, and we have all of the colors, we got everything we need. It’s going to be really fun to watch him play.”

Last year was Adams and Carroll’s first year together after Seattle sent two first-round picks and an additional fourth-round pick to the New York Jets for him. With last year as a measuring stick of what he is capable of with one arm, the Seahawks can’t wait to see what he can do with two.

Jamal Adams and the Seattle Seahawks are set to open their season Sunday, Sept. 12 against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. EST on Fox
