Dallas Cowboys fans are not so hot on head coach Mike McCarthy after the team’s embarrassing 26-6 loss to Washington in the final week of the regular season.

Another first-round loss in the playoffs would certainly set off the alarm bells in Dallas regarding McCarthy’s future, however, that’s not how Jerry Jones sees it.

Ahead of the Monday night matchup versus Tampa Bay, Jones commented on what impact a loss versus the Buccaneers would have on McCarthy’s job status, if any.

“No (it wouldn’t impact his status),” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan. “I don’t want to… No. That’s it. I don’t need to go into all the plusses or minuses. I’ve got a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this playoff game.”

Jones: ‘I have complete confidence in this coaching staff’

The Cowboys owner gave the now 30-20 head coach a vote of confidence after finishing the year at 12-5.

“I can’t tell you how much confidence I’ve got in Mike and our coaching staff being on top of where we are with this team right now,” Jones continued. “I have complete confidence in this coaching staff. It’s outstanding.”

Mike McCarthy’s contract with Dallas isn’t up for another two years. The former Green Bay head coach signed a five-year deal to coach the Cowboys in 2020.

Over the summer, Jerry Jones addressed why the franchise hasn’t yet extended McCarthy’s contract after their playoff run ended at home versus 49ers.

“We’re in good shape,” Jones said in July. “We have years left on the contract. There are years past this one, that’s all I’ll say.”

He went on to clarify that he has complete faith in McCarthy to lead the Cowboys to a Super Bowl. The contract extension simply hasn’t crossed his mind at this point because of how much time is remaining on it.

“I want to be real clear: He wouldn’t be sitting here today if I didn’t believe he was the man to lead this team to a Super Bowl,” Jones said at the time. “He wouldn’t be. And I have choices.”

Dallas faces Tom Brady and the Buccaneers on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET in Florida.
