Michigan State escaped its Week 1 matchup against Florida Atlantic with a 16-10 victory, but it wasn’t without its losses.

The game would end up seeing three Spartans lost to long-term injuries during their win against FAU, according to head coach Jonathan Smith.

Alante Brown will be hopeful to maybe November coming back. Khalil Majeed doubtful to come back. Dillon Tatum, at least a couple of months, if not for the year,” Smith said during his weekly press conference on Monday. “Those three guys, which is a blow, with all three of them contributing, playing awesome, feel really bad for them, but they are longer-term injuries.”

Smith said that Tatum and Majeed are dealing with lower-body injuries while Brown is nursing an upper-body injury. Tatum and Majeed are defensive backs while Smith plays wide receiver for the Spartans.

It’s likely that Smith will turn to junior Malik Spencer, transfer Nikai Martinez and redshirt senior Angelo Grose in the secondary. While Brown caught one pass for 15 yards before succumbing to injury, no Michigan State wideout amassed more than 30 yards during the contest as they were held to 114 passing yards on the day.

Michigan State will have to move forward without these contributors as the Spartans begin Big Ten Conference play in Week 2. They’ll take on Maryland on the road as they look to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

The Terrapins are coming off a 50-7 rout of UConn as quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. passed for 311 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Maryland’s offense amassed 629 total yards during the contest as they also tallied 428 yards on the round as well.

Meanwhile, the Spartans put up 293 yards of total offense during the season opener over the weekend. However, Michigan State held FAU to 248 total yards on defense. Michigan State’s defense may be the x-factor in the game for the Spartans to come away with a conference-opening victory on the road.

Looking ahead, Michigan State gets to match up with Prairie View in Week 3 before fully immersing themselves in Big Ten play beginning with Boston College on Sept. 21. Smith, Tatum and Majeed’s injuries will likely be updated as the season progresses.
