Josh Pate: Texas 'has to call Georgia daddy' until further notice
After two losses last year, Texas will, with its season’s hopes on the line, go to play Georgia in Athens on Saturday. That has made this matchup between the hedges a proving ground, and maybe the place for a last stand as far as the playoff goes, for the Longhorns.
Appearing on ‘Get Up’ on Thursday morning, Josh Pate joined to discuss No. 10 Texas vs. No. 5 Georgia. In going with the ‘Dawgs to win in a one-possession game, Pate added later that the Longhorns have to “call (them) daddy” for the time being, with the two losses from last season still unanswered.
“Texas got two shots last year, okay…Texas, until further notice, has to call Georgia daddy,” Pate stated. “I know this reverberates through the building at Texas. I got supreme respect for that staff, but it’s totally fair. How do you push back against this? As a staff, you’ve eventually got to win one of these games, as a locker room. You’re Texas! You recruit the best in the country. You allegedly develop as well as anyone in the country.”
Through five years so far under Steve Sarkisian, Texas currently has a record against ranked opponents, both in the regular season and in the postseason, of 14-13 (.519). That includes a pair of top five matchups last season against Georgia, with the Bulldogs winning 30-15 on the road in Austin before winning again, a 22-19 battle in overtime for the SEC Championship. That second loss also cost them a bye in last year’s playoff format, going from the No. 2 overall seed, which instead went to the Bulldogs, to the first at-large as the No. 5 seed in the CFP.

Now, this season, Texas will again be playing in a Top 10 matchup against a top-five-ranked edition of Georgia, with this one having a home-field advantage for UGA with a night kickoff inside Sanford Stadium. The Longhorns’ postseason hopes then may be on the line in this one as well, with a third loss likely being enough to keep them out of the College Football Playoff.
As far as stakes go, especially in the regular season, this would be one of the biggest games for Texas under Sarkisian. That’s why Pate says they have to go to Athens and earn it, both whether it be respect or a spot in the playoff, with a win over Georgia.
