Kayvaun Mulready is the No. 85 player in the 2024 On3 Consensus. The 6-foot-3 wing averaged 11.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.1 steals this summer, playing 17u with the City Rocks program on Nike’s EYBL Circuit.

“I know I can score, and I am an elite defender; I know that,” Mulready told On3. “But, I consider myself a pass-first guard. I like to facilitate and get my teammates going. Once my teammates get going, that means I can focus more on defense. And I’m a guard who can rebound. The game has slowed down for me, I see the court better, and the game is slowing down for me. My favorite player is Lebron James, but right now, I’m watching a lot of Russell Westbrook. He is a guy who attacks all the time, rebounds, defends, and he is a leader.”

On3 caught up with Kayvaun Mulready after a recent live viewing to talk about visits and his recruitment.

“I took my first official visit to Marquette,” Mulready said. “I don’t have any other visits set, but Providence is recruiting me hard; I hear a lot from Maryland and Penn State too.”

Mulready talks recruitment

Marquette: “They are in the Big East, so great conference with a lot of talent. They are a big guard school. I’m really close to Tre Norman, and he is going to Marquette. Since they’ve been recruiting him, they’ve been seeing me more and recruiting me harder. I have a trust in them and the coaches.

“They are a big guard team. They keep the ball moving, and there is not a lot of one-on-one play with them. That is who I am.”

Providence: “Ed Cooley is a fantastic coach. Coach (Brian) Blaney started recruiting me first, but Coach Cooley quickly took control of my recruitment. He’s been telling me how it is like a brotherhood there, and he would treat me like his own son. He likes local guys, and it’s another Big East school, so it’s another school that likes big guards. Coach Cooley cares about the little stuff, and he cares about rebounding and winning; those are the things I like too.”

Maryland: “Their coaches are really cool. They’re another school that rebounds a lot. I just watched them the other day with my team, and I can kind of see myself fitting in with how they play. I talked with eh coaches after the game.”

Penn State: “They’ve been recruiting me heavily for a while. The coaches there already treat me like family, and our conversations aren’t robotic; we talk about all kinds of things, school, basketball, family, his kids, it doesn’t matter. I like that trust, that relationship.”

Notre Dame has been there recently; they could be close to offering,” Mulready said.

In Mulready’s words

“I want to play in a program that cares for the little stuff,” Mulready said. “Diving on the ground, talking, leadership, rebounding. I’m not going to a school for a big name, but I’ll go to a school where I fit in and can play to the best of my abilities. I can play the one through the four, and I like doing that. So that is what I mean by fitting in, being able to do what it takes to help my team win.

“My mom, Trafficia Warburton, played college ball at Ana Maria. At one point, she led all of D-I, D-II, and D-III in steals and holds the school record for most rebounds (22) in a game.

“I’ll be looking at the education. Obviously, I’m a basketball player, but everyone has to have a plan B, so the education has to be in place. I’m focused on coming out in the 2024 class, and I’m not really going to rush things right now. I’m going to focus on this season and let the recruiting stuff come to me.”

Scouting report

Kayvaun Mulready is a strong guard. He plays a powerful game with some explosion. Mulready is a very good defender. He plays with toughness and instincts, both on and off the ball. He is able to turn defense into offense quickly, especially in the passing lanes. Offensively, he plays in straight lines and attacks the paint. Would like to see him develop the jump shot and create some counters off the bounce in the half-court. Mulready is a good rebounder and has no issues sticking his nose in there and doing the tough guy stuff. There is some positional versatility. Mom played college basketball.
