Even with college football opening last weekend, one of the sport’s biggest storylines happened off the field. That’s because it was officially approved last week for the College Football Playoff to expand from four teams to 12. With so many other changes, people are all over the place with their feelings about expansion. For Georgia’s Kirby Smart, he’s still sorting out where he’s at with the news.

Smart talked about expansion during his press conference on Monday. He says he hasn’t ever been for one model or the other. On top of that, he thinks it’s not too big of a deal considering it’s a product of people just looking for a change.

“I don’t know how it’ll affect Georgia personally. I’m hesitant to say I supported it. Wouldn’t say that I’ve been clearly in one camp over the other. I think that there’s some good and bad to both and I don’t think we know the repercussions of going to 12 over four,” said Smart. “There’s been some good things about four and there’ll probably be some good things about 12. It’s just everybody loves change and it’s on a continuum.”

It was exciting for the sport when the championship was changed to the original playoff model. With over half a decade of that system behind us, the time for more change had arrived. We realized the pros and cons of the four-team field and, with those in mind, made these new changes. However, Kirby Smart knows it’s not the end. There will be people wanting changes after it becomes 12 and so it’s on him to focus on nothing but ensuring Georgia makes it in, regardless of how many spots there are.

“There’ll be somebody complaining about something about 12. I don’t really get into whether or not it’s going to be beneficial for us or not because I think it’s year to year on what kind of team you have and how other teams do in the country,” Smart said.

When push comes to shove, this decision doesn’t affect Georgia too much. Kirby Smart has had his team in contention with only four teams. That leaves plenty of wiggle room for the Bulldogs to continue making the postseason moving forward. For Smart, he can’t worry about the changing landscape of college football. All he can do is center his attention on what he can control in Athens and let everything else fall into place.
