The first week of the college football season brought us tremendous performances, and Kirk Herbstreit was on the call for a handful of them. Following Week One, Herbstreit named his top performing players from a wild weekend.

Kirk Herbstreit’s top performing players from Week 1:

QB McKenzie Milton, Florida State. While he didn’t play the entire game, simply seeing Milton grace the football field once again with his presence was phenomenal. Overcoming a horrific leg injury and the doubts of doctors, Milton led a furious Florida State comeback that came within a hair of an upset victory.

QB Bryce Young, Alabama. If you thought the Alabama offense wasn’t going to be as explosive this season, think again. In his debut, Young simply threw for four touchdown passes to quiet the doubters. Alabama looks dangerous as usual, and their offense still looks electrifying with Young under center.

QB Matt Corral & WR Dontario Drummond, Ole Miss. With Lane Kiffin missing from the sidelines, many wondered if the Rebels offense would stall. However, it only took one drive to quiet those concerns. This season, Corral and Drummond figure to be one of the nation’s most potent combinations.

DB Riley Moss, Iowa. While offenses electrified this weekend, Moss entered the conversation by recording two-sixes against Indiana. It was impossible to overlook his contributions, and he’ll look to stay hot against Brock Purdy and Iowa State.

LB Nakobe Dean, Georgia. The leader of the Georgia defense, Dean helped stifle Clemson on Saturday night. Moreover, D.J. Uiagalelei is missing from the list because of how fantastic Dean and his teammates were.

QB Taulia Tagovailoa & WR Dontay Demus Jr., Maryland. Many believed Tagovailoa and Demus Jr. could create a dangerous duo this season, and they got started this weekend. Tagovailoa threw for three touchdowns, while Demus Jr. accumulated 133 yards and a touchdown on six receptions.

RB Kenneth Walker III, Michigan State. The Spartans are off to a much better start under Mel Tucker in Year Two, and a lot of that has to do with Walker III. He ravaged Northwestern, rushing for 264 yards and four touchdowns in a victory.

QB Jack Coan, Notre Dame. Perhaps Coan was overshadowed by Milton’s return, but the Notre Dame quarterback was magnificent in his own right. Against Florida State, Coan passed for 366 yards and four touchdowns to open the season.
