With regular season high school football finished across the country, On3 has released its second-to-last rankings update for the 2023 recruiting cycle. Ranking as the No. 22 overall player in the 2023 On300 and earning five-star status is Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances Academy EDGE and LSU commit Dashawn Womack. He is a new five-star in the On300 and rose from a previous ranking of No. 29.

The latest edition of On3’s 2023 rankings features 26 five-star players, up from 23 in the previous update in September. Of those 26 prospects, 19 are currently committed to college programs. While some recruits may have played their last down as a high schooler, evaluations — both in-person and on tape — are far from over.

This latest ranking sets the table for the important final ranking in January 2023. That final update comes after postseason all-star games, where top prospects across the country face off in a week of practices and end with a game.

National Signing Day is also right around the corner, with the Early Signing Period starting December 21 and postseason all-star games right after that.

What makes Dashawn Womack an On3 five-star recruit?

On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power breaks down why Womack was elevated to five-star status.

“We entertained making him a five-star in the last update but just wanted to see a little more. He hadn’t played a ton of games before then so just wanted to see if he could keep it up and he has.

“It’s a strong cycle at the edge position in 2023. There’s some edges outside the five-star ranks who I think could be could push for five-stars as well. Dashawn Womack, what sets them apart among the group is just he’s pretty advanced right now. He has a very high floor. I think he has a good shot of coming in and playing significant snaps for LSU, maybe even starting for LSU as a freshman. The pass rush polish. He’s gotten a lot better technically. He is ready to go from a size perspective. This guy’s around 250 pounds right now. He checks the boxes in terms of the length and athleticism. There’s really not many holes in his game at all. Strong run defender, has pass rush moves. In terms of day one impact, he’s up there if not at the top among the edge rushers in this in this class.

“Seeing him do it like in big games, he’s really kind of dominated in a lot of the showcase games that St. Francis has had against top competition. Really took over their game against DeSoto earlier in the season. Every stop, he’s looked good. He was one that I think was on the cusp of coming into this and he’s shown enough in the last couple of months for us to go ahead and make that move.”

On3 compares Womack’s style of play to former Michigan and current Baltimore Ravens EDGE David Ojabo.
