Mac Jones earns respect with Cam Newton impression and rap lyrics
Mac Jones is winning over the Patriots locker room in every way imaginable way. Almost nobody figured he would be making headlines for his impressions of Cam Newton. Apparently Jones delivered, and the 15th overall selection had even more surprises for his new Patriots teammates.
“We had a skit, I want to say two days ago, two or three days ago, the rookies killed it,” Patriots defensive back Jalen Mills told NBC Sports Boston on Monday. “These camp days are long, so at the end of the day you need that laugh out of those guys.”
Mills added: “Mac Jones, he came in dressed as Cam. He had the big hat on, had a scarf on. Came in saying Cam’s slogan and different things like that. It was real fun to see him get out of character.”
Veteran linebacker Raekwon McMillan echoed Mills’ sentiment.
“It was spot-on about everything that Cam does, how he dresses. He came in with a suitcase. You know Cam’s swagged up to the floor so (Jones) came in and he kind of jumped out of his comfort zone, too. Mac’s kind of a chill guy, relaxed, kicked back, and he came in acting like Cam. It was dope.”
Training camp just began, but this is an ideal start for Jones in New England.
“You don’t know if he’s down on himself and you don’t necessarily know when he’s up either,” Newton said of the rookie quarterback. “I think he’s real cool.”
Clearly Newton, who appears to be the Patriots starter for now, has taken the rookie under his wing as a mentor.

Spot-on impressions weren’t the only thing that surprised Newton about the rookie.
“I’m surprised his knowingness of Hip Hop music,” Newton said in a press conference when asked about Jones.. “You will catch him in the locker room quoting some Future, Da Baby, but those are things you just got to learn with time.”
Mac Jones shines on field, too
There were plenty of doubters and critics when Patriots head coach Bill Belichick drafted the former Alabama passer in the first round last April. Cam Newton had an in inconsistent year in 2020, but flashed promise at times as well.
“Jones was back on center stage Monday morning for the fifth day of training camp, and he again was a sharp-dressed man. Or at least a sharp-dressed passer,” said Jim McBride of the Boston Globe.” Jones completed 21 of 28 passes (unofficially) during competitive team drills, including a 16-of-21 performance in 11-on-11 work.
The highlight play of Jones’s day — and the entire camp — was a deep completion (let’s say 45ish yards) to Isaiah Zuber, who showed good concentration in the end zone against the tight double coverage of Dee Virgin and D’Angelo Ross.
