MONTVERDE, FL – Day two of the Montverde Academy Invitational Tournament (MAIT) kicked off with all six teams playing. The talent level was deep, and there were storylines throughout the day.

On3 Sport’s Jamie Shaw was courtside for the action.

James Johns

You can open a lot of eyes being a shot-maker. Johns is a 6-foot-6 junior at Long Island (NY) Lutheran, and he made shots. Johns has good positional size, and he was comfortable attacking closeouts in straight lines. He will need to continue getting stronger but going five of seven from three tracks with his recruitment.

Recruitment: Johns is setting up visits with Wake Forest and Ole Miss

Chauncey Gibson

After a forgettable first night at MAIT, Gibson showcased what made him an ACC on day two. The 6-foot-6 wing shot the ball well, going four of eight from the field. Gibson pushed the break in the open floor and made some good passes. It was a 20 point effort for Gibson in the loss, but a good bounce-back game.

Recruitment: Committed to Clemson

Taylor Hendricks

Hendricks is the On3 Consensus No. 87 player, and his game continues to get better each time out. Lengthy with good touch, Hendricks off-ball cutting was his best attribute in this one. He finished with confidence at the rim and displayed excellent timing when protecting the rim. There should be continued upside here as his frame continues to fill out. Johnny Dawkins was courtside at MAIT for the win.

Recruitment: Committed to UCF

Riley Kugel

This weekend has been quite the statement for Kugel as he was the top performer of the day, again. Kugel is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard at Orlando (FL) Dr. Phillips. Kugel scored at all three levels of the floor, including a massive dunk on a late rotating big. He has handle, explosion, vision, and a smooth jump shot; he finished with a game-high 24 points in the loss.

Recruitment: Committed to Mississippi State

Derik Queen

This was a complete game for Queen as he showcased different pieces of his vast skill set. In the first half, Queen started on the block. He set up big, showed patience and footwork, and finished with both hands around the basket. Queen showed perimeter skills in the second half as he initiated offense and knocked down a three. Queen is one of the nation’s top prospects in his class. Every one of his team-high 12 points showed why tonight.

Recruitment: Mentions DePaul, Indiana, and Texas, among others. He will start visiting schools his junior season.
