Matt Stafford finds himself mentioned in the same category as a legendary Los Angeles Rams quarterback. After Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Stafford has tied Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner for the most touchdowns by Rams quarterback in their first three games of the season.

Stafford’s Settling in

In Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers, Stafford put on a show through the air. He finished the game with 343 yards passing on 27 of 38 attempts and added in four touchdowns. In his first meeting against Tampa Bay and Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady as a member of the Los Angeles Rams Stafford outdueled Brady. The Buccaneers quarterback did tally 432 yards through the air on 41 completions but only had one touchdown pass on the day.

The best part about Stafford’s stat line for the Rams was he threw zero interceptions for the second time this season.

In the Rams season opener against a familiar foe to Stafford, the Chicago Bears, he had a near-perfect debut. In that game, the Rams did not attempt a high number of passes, but the former Lion’s quarterback made the most of his opportunities. He finished that game 20 of 26 for 321 yards through the air and added three touchdowns, and this was Stafford’s first game of the season not tallying a single turnover.

Rams high-powered offense

So far in the year, Stafford is putting up big numbers for Los Angeles. He is fifth in the NFL in passing yards at 942, tied for second with nine touchdown passes with just one interception thrown. He leads the league in QBR at 82.8 and the second-best quarterback rating at 129.8. But Stafford is not doing this alone. In Cooper Kupp he has the league leader in receptions with 25, in touchdowns with five, and receiving yards at 367. Kupp is also the clearcut leader in yards per game with 122.3.

Stafford also has to show some love to his offensive line. On the season, he has been sacked just three times for 29 yards. With the guys up front helping to keep a clean pocket, the Rams and Matt Stafford have just committed two turnovers — one fumble and one interception.

Sunday’s performance by Stafford has Rams fans looking towards the end of the season accolades. The year that Kurt Warner started off the season with nine touchdowns over three games he won the NFL’s MVP award and Super Bowl MVP honors.
