Dallas Mavericks guard Reggie Bullock has won the 2021-22 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The honor is given out each season to a player who upholds the NBA’s values of equality, respect and inclusion.

Other finalists for the award included the Milwaukee Bucks’ Jrue Holiday, Memphis Grizzlies’ Jaren Jackson Jr., Minnesota Timberwolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns and Toronto Raptors’ Fred VanVleet.

Although this is just Bullock’s first season in Dallas, he has already made a big impact on the LGBTQ community in the city. Since joining the Mavs, Bullock has helped organizations such as Abounding Prosperity, Dallas Southern Pride, House of Rebirth, The Black-Tie Dinner, the Resource Center and the Muhlaysia Booker Foundation, which was founded in honor of a transgender woman who was murdered in Dallas.

The NBA also said that Bullock started an organization called RemarkaBULL, which provides housing and support to LGBTQ community members in need. His passion for helping the LGBTQ community came after his own transgender sister, Mia Henderson, was murdered in 2014.

Reggie Bullock is set to receive a prize of $100,000 for winning the award, which will be donated to the charity of his choice. Additionally, the other four finalists for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion award will receive $25,000 to donate to charity.

Bullock has been an integral part of Dallas’ playoff run in 2022, especially in some of the wins. He recently scored 21 points in Game 2 of the Western Conference against the Golden State Warriors, though the Mavericks would ultimately lose by a score of 126-117 to take a 2-0 series lead.

So far throughout this postseason, Bullock is averaging 11.1 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 40% from 3-point range. Game 3 against the Warriors is set to tip off at 9 p.m. ET at American Airlines Center in Dallas, with the Mavericks needing a victory to get back in the series.
