Miami may not have a big recruiting class, but it does have a very strong one.

The latest prospect to join the group is Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman four-star EDGE Cyrus Moss, who announced his commitment to the Hurricanes during the fourth quarter of the All-American Bowl. Moss chose Miami over top Alabama, Arizona State, Oregon and USC.

His commitment sees the Hurricanes jump in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking from No. 18 to No. 12.

Miami has by far the smallest recruiting class in the top 20 with only 10 commits. But of those 10 commitments, all but one — Atlanta North Springs cornerback Jaden Harris — is a four-star recruit.

Greer (S.C.) IMG Academy tight end Jaleel Skinner, who new head coach Mario Cristobal managed to flip from Alabama during the final days before the early signing period opens, is the highest-rated recruit at No. 65 in the On3 Consensus. Skinner is also rated as a five-star prospect by On3.

But defense is the hallmark of the class, especially with Moss’ commitment. Seven of the 10 pledges are on the defensive side of the ball.

Cyrus Moss bringing a great skill set to Miami

Cyrus Moss is the No. 83 prospect in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the nation’s No. 8 EDGE and the No. 2 prospect in the state of Nevada.

Four-star safety Zion Branch, his teammate at Las Vegas Bishop Gorman and the only player ranked ahead of him from Nevada, is a USC commit.

The two led a tenacious defense for Bishop Gorman this past fall. In his scouting report on Moss, On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power had high praise for the four-star while acknowledging Moss has plenty of potential to continue getting better:

“Tall, angular pass rusher who plays for one of the nation’s top high school programs. Primarily lines up as a stand-up pass rusher for Bishop Gorman. Is a fluid, smooth athlete. Shows quickness off the snap and can run sideline-to-sideline in pursuit. Coordinated enough to drop into coverage. Also has some bend around the edge and quick hands prior to contact. More of a finesse rusher at this point and needs to increase his strength and physicality to hold up against bigger offensive linemen at the next level. Affects plays at the high school level but could stand to improve his finishing ability behind the line of scrimmage.”
