Myles Garrett believes Perrion Winfrey needs to learn how to be a professional sooner rather than later.

Evidently, the rookie from Oklahoma isn’t on top of things as he begins his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns. Winfrey was held out of almost the entire victory for the franchise over the Carolina Panthers in Week 1, and Winfrey was held out of practice on Friday in preparation for Sunday’s showdown with the New York Jets.

The Browns thought they were getting a steal in Winfrey, but it’s been a rocky beginning. Nevertheless, the coaching staff has Garrett’s support as they try to get the best of out the former Sooners defensive lineman.

“I think we all have to step up and say something, but sometimes silence speaks louder than words,” Garrett said on Friday regarding Winfrey, via Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. “We’ve used our voice a couple of times and at the end of the day, he’s got to learn how to be a pro.

“[Coach] Kevin [Stefanski] took it into his own hands and he felt like that was the right thing to do, and I’m behind my coach’s actions totally.”

While the media hasn’t seen what’s making the coaching staff so annoyed with Winfrey, its evident other Browns players have, as Garrett added it was “pretty common knowledge” that the rookie is in hot water.

“It was pretty common knowledge,” Garrett added. “And it was easy to see. It wasn’t like we had to bring it to his attention. It was just, his actions were very apparent.”

Luckily, Perrion Winfrey is in the fledgling stages of his NFL career, but it’s evident the former Oklahoma star is going to need to change his approach if he ever wants to be successful in the league.

More on Perrion Winfrey, Cleveland Browns

Moreover, the Browns thought they found the next piece of their defensive line in Oklahoma defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey. After spending the past two seasons with the Sooners, Winfrey was taken 108th overall in April’s NFL Draft.

A former JUCO transfer, Winfrey joined OU in the 2020 season out of Iowa Western after receiving offers from AlabamaLSUTexas and others. In two years of junior college, he totaled 55 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks and one forced fumble.

Moreover, Winfrey went on to earn second team All-Big 12 selections both seasons in Norman and showed vast improvements as a senior. Last season, Winfrey started all 12 games for the Sooners to finish with 23 tackles (11 for loss), 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Although those numbers might not exactly pop out on paper, the Browns can rest assured after the defensive tackle’s performance both in the Senior Bowl and at the NFL Combine.

In the Senior Bowl, Winfrey finished with two sacks and three tackles for a loss. He was named the game’s MVP, going viral on Twitter and more for his performance throughout the week. At the combine, he dropped more jaws after finishing with an official 40-yard dash time of 4.89 seconds.
