After less than four seasons, the New York Giants made the decision to move on from head coach Brian Daboll. Now, one of the premier jobs in the NFL is open and expected to draw a lot of interest. It’s also expected to be a job that hires an experienced head coach to lead the franchise moving forward.

It’s still extremely early, but ESPN analysts on Get Up already looked at a few potential hires they’d be excited about. That included Dan Orlovsky, who brought up a couple of options. The first was sitting head coach Kevin Stefanski. The other was more interesting, defending national champion and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day.

“I’ll give you two names,” Orlovsky said. “These are names that I would like for the Giants. Realistic or not, I don’t know that. One would be Kevin Stefanski if they move on in Cleveland. A second name. I’m not saying this to be — I would love Ryan Day there.”

Day does have some NFL experience, too. In 2015 and 2016, he was a quarterbacks coach with the Philadelphia Eagles and then the San Francisco 49ers. However, he’s been at Ohio State since leaving the NFL. That includes being the Buckeyes’ head coach since 2019. In his time leading the program, he’s 79-10 overall and won the national championship just one season ago.

“I think Ryan Day would be a phenomenal head coach… I just think he’s a great coach,” Orlovsky concluded.

The question is, of course, whether or not Day would be interested in leaving Ohio State. Certainly, the Ohio State job is among the best in all of college football and not one that anybody would expect him to leave for a different job in college. However, the NFL can be a different animal for coaches who want to find a new challenge.

In the case of the New York Giants job, it comes as one of the best traditional jobs in the sport. The team also just drafted what it hopes to have as a franchise quarterback moving forward in Jaxson Dart. So, there’s plenty of reason to think it’ll be a job many coaches are excited about. At the same time, wins have been hard to come by lately for New York. Since 2017, they’ve had just one winning season.

Day is far from the first college head coach to be suggested for the Giants’ job. Robert Griffin III immediately put forward Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin. Then, there’s also been speculation about North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick, who was previously the New York defensive coordinator.
