Garrett Wilson gives unusual answer on NFL receiver he models his game after

After putting together a standout career at Ohio State, wide receiver Garrett Wilson has now taken his game to the next level – as he was selected No. 10 overall by the New York Jets in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft last Thursday.

Tallying 2,213 yards and 23 touchdowns with 143 receptions over three seasons with the Buckeyes, Wilson made a name for himself and ultimately became a top-10 pick. Now, as he makes the move to New York, Wilson has his mind set on continuing to be successful on the football field.

As most younger football players model their game after a college or NFL star, there’s a former NFL wide receiver that Wilson followed very closely throughout their career – and he shared who it was while meeting with the media for his introductory press conference with the Jets.

“I’ve always kind of modeled my game after Stevie Johnson,” Wilson said. “He played with the Bills back in the day and kind of had a basketball background – he was elusive. I liked the way he played the game. But there’s so many good receivers in the league, you try and take something from all their games. Cooper Kupp, Davante Adams – they’ve all got different things that they bring to the table.

“Being a young dude that wants to be as good as I can be, I’m trying to take something from all their games, for sure.”

After Wilson shared that Stevie Johnson was the player he modeled his game after, a reporter then asked if they had some type of friendship or connection – simply because Johnson was an interesting pick.

“I just like Stevie Johnson, for real,” Wilson said. “He has that basketball background and you can tell when he’s playing. That’s the draw there. … That’s the draw.”

Johnson, who played at Kentucky, was in the NFL from 2008-2016. He played for the Buffalo Bills, San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers during his professional career.
