Cornerback Karon Prunty, one of South Carolina’s big offseason additions, is leaving leave the team just a month after officially joining the program.

Prunty, a freshman All-American at Kansas last season, entered the NCAA transfer portal Thursday, On3 has learned.

Prunty committed to South Carolina on June 26, choosing the Gamecocks over Tennessee. He enrolled in July and was seen as a potential starter in South Carolina’s secondary, but now is back in the portal.

It comes just a week after Prunty, a former three-star prospect from Portsmouth (Va.) Norcom, met with the media at South Carolina’s media day and discussed his decision to join the Gamecocks.

I love the coaching style of Coach (Shane) Beamer, Coach (Torrian) Gray and Coach (Clayton) White,” Prunty told Gamecock Central. “Everybody’s really good guys. It just felt like home when I first came here. It was closer to home, like five hours away. So I just felt like this was the perfect fit for me.”

At Kansas last season, Prunty ranked first nationally among freshmen with 11 passes defended and didn’t allow a touchdown. Opposing quarterbacks had a completion percentage of just 38.5 when throwing in Prunty’s direction. That’s especially noteworthy because as a team, the Jayhawks allowed a completion percentage of 61.9.

White, the Gamecocks’ new defensive coordinator, and Gray, the new secondary coach, are having to rebuild a secondary that returns just one fulltime starter.
