NFL insider: 'No offer' from Cowboys for Odell Beckham Jr.
The Dallas Cowboys put on a full-court press for NFL free agent Odell Beckham Jr. leading up to and during his visit to DFW on Monday. However, according to ESPN’s Jane Slater, there was no offer extended from the team to the former LSU star.
“I’m told there was no offer to OBJ made per a source informed,” Slater tweeted on Wednesday. “Serious concerns about ability to play this season. In the absence of seeing him run routes, seeing him cut…they are forced to evaluate the information they have. Doesn’t seem as optimistic as it was pre visit.”
The Cowboys were the third stop on Beckham’s list after meeting with the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants last week.
If he is getting close to making a decision, the free agent isn’t sending many clear hints. On Twitter, however, OBJ did share a single black pawn emoji, which is potentially an indication that his next “chess move” is at hand.
Cowboys’ concerns linger on Beckham’s recovery
Slater was not the only reporter at ESPN to catch wind of the Cowboys’ waning interest following Beckham’s visit.
ESPN’s Ed Werder shared a report from a source that revealed Beckham is still questionable to contribute for the remainder of the season.
“The #Cowboys have concerns after Odell Beckham Jr.’s physical that his recovery from torn left ACL in Super Bowl has not progressed enough to ensure he would play before mid-January and possibility exists signing him would have no benefit until 2023 season,” Werder tweeted on Tuesday.
Part of the visit was a health checkup at the Star facility with head athletic trainer Jim Maurer and director of rehabilitation Britt Brown.
The 30-year-old receiver is coming back from a second ACL tear in the past two seasons, leaving many, including the Cowboys, to wonder how healthy he currently is.
Although the team has taken flyers on players with questionable injury situations in the past, as Slater points out, they had inside info on those players, like Michael Gallup and Jaylon Smith.
“Cowboys have rolled the dice on players with injury concerns,” Slater tweeted. “Jaylon Smith comes to mind but remember his surgery was performed by Cowboys team doctor Dr. Dan Cooper. So they felt they had a handle on that situation and plenty of information.”
