Nic Codie has been one of the spring’s biggest stock risers. Playing with the Southern Assault program on the Adidas 3SSB Circuit, the 6-foot-8 forward is averaging 13.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks while shooting 40.0 percent from three. Since April, Codie has reported more than ten high major offers.

“I’m a versatile player, someone who can really play multiple positions,” Codie told On3. “I can do a little bit of everything. I don’t force things; let the game come to me, and I can guard multiple positions, rebound, and be a leader. I’m a high-energy person. I think Pascal Siakim plays a little like me. He can do a little bit of everything. Some Scottie Barnes with his leadership. He’s one of the youngest on the team, but he’s always communicating.”

On3 caught up with Nic Codie recently to talk about his recruitment.

Codie sets first official visit

“My first official visit will be June 1-3 to TCU,” Codie said. “That is the only one I have scheduled right now.”

TCU: “They were the first school to offer me an official visit instead of another unofficial. I’ve been talking with them for a long time, and I really enjoy their coaching staff, and we have a really good relationship. I’ve been to a couple of games; I like how they play, how they move the ball. They like to get out in transition, and they go some shooters. When they had Big Ed (Eddie Lampkin) inside, it was really four-around-one, and he was working down there. Everyone on the court is versatile, and they can all really run. I think it’s a really good program.

“They have made it known that they really want me. Coach (Jamie) Dixon is always calling me. I don’t really have head coaches calling me like that, and I love that about them. He’s the head guy, and he’s making it known that he wants me to be there. Mike Miles is from where I’m from, and I’ve looked up to him since I was younger. They way he plays, they’ve developed him real well.”

Codie talks visits

“I do plan on taking official visits to Houston and Virginia Tech, too,” Codie said.

Virginia Tech: “I don’t know a ton about their program. What I like about them is the communication. I’m big on loyalty and communication. I’m probably getting a text from them multiple times throughout the day. There is constant communication that I really like with Virignia Tech.

Coach JD (Byers) has done a great job recruiting me. They think I fit in with the motion of how they play and their offense. There is a lot of motion and movement, catch and shoot. There is a lot of spacing there; one through five are spaced out. They think I can fit that well. They like I can guard multiple positions, switch on the floor, and shoot the outside three.”

Houston: “Houston is one of the top programs in college basketball, so I’ve heard about them a lot. I know they like long wings. I feel like I fit what they do very well because they develop good four men. Players like Jarace Walker, who just entered the draft from there. They have a long history of developing four men, so I feel like I fit pretty well with Houston.”

“I think Illinois and Texas could be offering me soon,” Codie said. “They’re both in contact a lot, they hit me, and my coaches and my pops a lot.”

In his words

“My dad, Nakia Codie, was a safety for the Steelers,” Nic Codie said. “He played basketball in high school and ran track and played football at Baylor.

“I want to go to a school that is going to develop me. I want them to push me early on; obviously, I want to play too. I’m really big on loyalty, communication, and trust. So a school that is always in contact with me, checking up on me on a regular basis. I’ll want to go to a school that likes to keep players around, develop them, and just build off those guys. Winning is big for me; I want to win, too.

“I feel comfortable playing the four. I like to get up and down the floor; I think I can move really well for a four and get out in transition. Style of play matters, but I’m the type of person that can develop into a lot of different styles. I develop into a three or stay as a four. I can adapt to a lot of different styles.”
