Former Iowa State football player Nicholas Kron has been arrested in connection with an assault of Iowa basketball star Jordan Bohannon that occurred in May, Grant Schulte of the Associated Press reports.

29-year old Kron faces an assault causing bodily injury charge for allegedly attacking the Hawkeye guard outside a downtown Iowa City bar. Bohannon suffered a serious head injury. Kron turned himself in Saturday, was booked into the Johnson County Jail and was released about 20 minutes later, a jail official told Schulte.

Bohannon filed a lawsuit days earlier alleging that Kron “brutally, unlawfully and intentionally” assaulted him.

The incident occurred early Sunday morning, May 23, according to police records. According to police, after DC’s Bar in Iowa City closed, Nicholas Kron and another individual got into an argument. Kron then walked over to Bohannon and punched him three times in the back of the head, causing a cut on his head and knocking him to the ground. Bohannon reportedly needed to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

Days after the incident, Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery made a statement.

“We were made aware of the incident immediately,” McCaffery said. “We are grateful that friends who were with Jordan at the time kept the incident from escalating. His health is our No. 1 concern.”

Bohannon is one of the best players to suit up for the Hawkeyes and is the program’s career leader in assists (639), 3-pointers made (364), free-throw percentage (.887) and games played (143). Last season, he led the Hawkeyes with 80 3-pointers and 135 assists and was third in scoring with 10.6 points per game.

Bohannon announced he would be returning to Iowa in 2021 for his sixth season.

Nicholas Kron last played for Iowa State in 2013, earning Academic All-Big 12 second-team honors. That season, he accumulated 14 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. He left the program that same year after his redshirt sophomore season.
