Notre Dame redshirt sophomore quarterback Kenny Minchey plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal after three seasons with the Fighting Irish, On3’s Pete Nakos has learned.

Minchey signed with ND in the Class of 2023 as a four-star prospect after flipping his commitment from Pittsburgh. He saw action in 10 games over his three years in South Bend, all as a reserve. Heading into the 2025 season, he battled redshirt freshman CJ Carr for the starting job, but was ultimately beaten out.

In six appearances this season, he completed 20 of 26 passes for 196 yards. He also rushed seven times for 84 yards and a touchdown.

A native of Hendersonville (Tenn.), Minchey will enter the portal as one of the most intriguing young quarterback options to hit the market. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at his next destination.

As a high schooler, he was the No. 171 overall prospect and No. 14 quarterback in his class, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services.

Fighting Irish return a very young QB room behind CJ Carr

With Minchey’s departure, the Fighting Irish quarterback situation gets very interesting behind Carr

The redshirt freshman is expected to return and will likely be a Heisman contender to begin his sophomore season. But behind him, the Irish are very young. Minchey and Carr were the only quarterbacks to take game snaps this season, while freshman Blake Hebert took a redshirt year.

Heading into next year, they’ll add high school signee Noah Grubbs, but could very well hit the transfer portal for an addition of their own.

Motivated by a College Football Playoff snub, the Fighting Irish will likely enter the season as a projected playoff team and would do well to add a veteran backup behind Carr.
