Oklahoma junior wide receiver Theo Wease will miss at least half the season with a lower body injury he suffered in practice, head coach Lincoln Riley announced on Saturday night after the Tulane victory.

With Wease out against Tulane, Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler completed passes to nine different pass catchers for the Sooners. Marvin Mims led all Oklahoma receivers with five catches for 117 yards.

Rattler did not play very well and threw two interceptions, often sailing the ball high on his receivers. He completed 30 of his 39 passing attempts for 304 passing yards and one touchdown pass.

The contest looked like Oklahoma would pull away at one point, but Tulane battled back behind the superb play of quarterback Michael Pratt. Oklahoma squeaking out a hard fought 40-35 victory over Tulane.

Michael Pratt shined on the big stage

Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt was drawing the praise of announcers commentating the game and he likely earned the respect of many college football fans nationwide, too. He completed 27 of his 44 pass attempts in the game, while tossing in three touchdowns and no interceptions.

The stats don’t even tell the whole story with Pratt, as he was sacked four times in the contest and took a beating from Sooner defenders. He limped on the field in pain throughout the game but he managed to battle through it and make play after play for the Green Wave offense.

As a runner, Pratt rushed 15 times for 62 total yards and one touchdown against the Sooners.

In 2020, Pratt established himself as one of the top young quarterbacks in college football, after he passed for 20 touchdowns in his first season at Tulane. As a freshman, he completed over 55 percent of his pass attempts, while throwing for over 1,800 passing yards. He tossed in eight interceptions in his first year at quarterback.

OU without Theo Wease

Wease was expected to be a major contributor on offense in the 2021 season for the Sooners, so his loss is a major blow for the Oklahoma offense. In 2020, he demonstrated the ability to be one of the Sooners’ biggest playmakers at the wide receiver position, hauling in 37 catches for 530 yards, while bringing in four touchdowns.

The Texas native was one of the nation’s premiere wide receivers coming out of high school, earning five-star status from most recruiting services. His senior year at Allen High School (Allen, Texas), Wease hauled in over 1,000 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. He was selected to play in the Under Armour All-American game. The six-foot-two receiver chose Oklahoma over LSU, Texas A&M, USC, and others.

The Sooners will now look to Marvin Mims, Jadon Haselwood, Mario Williams, and others to pick up in the slack in Wease’s absence.

Oklahoma faces their next opponent on Saturday Sept. 11 when they face the Western Carolina Catamounts.
