Hayward (Calif.) Tennyson four-star wide receiver Taeshaun Lyons received an offer from Notre Dame on Aug. 9. A day later, he received an expert prediction from On3’s Mike Singer to commit to the Fighting Irish.

According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, it is a close race between Notre Dame and Washington to land Lyons’ pledge. The RPM gives the Huskies a 58.1% chance, while the Fighting Irish’s odds are 41.2%.

Lyons is rated as a three-star recruit and the No. 657 overall prospect in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He is also the No. 95 wide receiver and No. 44 player in California.

But On3 rates him much higher. Not only is Lyons a four-star recruit, but also the No. 191 overall prospect and No. 28 wide receiver in the 2023 On300. Additionally, On3 rates him as the No. 12 player in California.

Inside the two school race for Lyons

Washington is the only school that Lyons has visited so far. Per the On3 Visit Center, he took an official visit to Seattle on June 24 and an unofficial visit on March 4.

If he chooses Washington, he would be the third wide receiver in the Huskies’ 2023 recruiting class alongside Pittsburg (Calif.) four-star Rashid Williams and Adelanto (Calif.) three-star Keith Reynolds.

The Huskies’ class is currently ranked No. 31 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings and No. 4 in the Pac-12. It contains 19 recruits and is composed of five four-stars and 14 three-stars.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class currently has three wide receivers committed. They are Austin (Texas) Westlake four-star Jaden Greathouse, Round Rock (Texas) Stony Point four-star Braylon James and Folsom (Calif.) four-star Rico Flores Jr.

The Fighting Irish’s class is currently ranked No. 2 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Rankings. It includes 23 commitments and is comprised of one five-star, 20 four-stars and two three-stars.

On the day he got offered, Lyons spoke with head coach Marcus Freeman, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and wide receivers coach Chansi Stuckey, according to Singer. Lyons’ cousin, cornerback TaRiq Bracy, currently plays for the Fighting Irish and he had a family friend run track at and graduate from Notre Dame.

“I was in disbelief when I got the offer,” Lyons told Singer. “My dad was jumping up and down. I was smiling but wasn’t trying to be too loud because I was still on the phone with them. I was really happy about it.”

Taeshaun Lyons On3 Scouting Summary

The following is the On3 Scouting Summary for Taeshaun Lyons:

“Wiry wideout with super smooth movement patterns and big-play ability. Has a thin frame, measuring at over 6-foot-2 and around 160 pounds prior to his senior season. Registers as a good athlete, running an 11.03 second 100 meter time in addition to a 4.64 electronically-timed 40-yard dash as a junior. Dominates average to subpar competition on Friday nights. Accounted for 955 yards and 16 touchdowns on just 31 catches as a junior. A threat to score every time he touches the ball at the high school level. A naturally smooth mover and has advanced routes and on-field change of direction at this stage. Shows the ability to separate within his routes in the camp setting. Ball skills are not a question, but can struggle with finishing through contact due to his relative lack of strength. Will need to continue adding mass at the college level.”
