Pac-12 weighing whether to dump the North-South divisional structure in the future

The Pac-12 conference is weighing whether or not to dump the North-South divisional structure in future football seasons, according to commissioner George Kliavkoff.

The move would result in the conference just having the best two teams in the conference play in the title game in Las Vegas every year. It’s an interesting idea and one that likely many other conferences across the college landscape will take a look at.

There were reports the Pac-12 was considering scrapping the North and South divisions as early as this summer. The potential changes are a response to the expansion of the College Football Playoff from four teams to 12 teams, according to Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News.

In Wilner’s article that he wrote in June, he explained the reasoning behind scrapping the divisions. “A single 12-team league would eliminate the nightmare scenario in which, for example, a four-loss division winner with no hope for making the playoff upsets a two-loss division winner that would have qualified.”

How many times have college football fans seen two teams in a conference title game that weren’t necessarily the two best teams in the conference? Too many, that’s for sure.

The key question will be if conferences decide to scrap the divisional standings, then how exactly will they determine what teams are in the championship game?

The move comes at a time when the college landscape is rapidly evolving and changing so much that it can be difficult for fans to keep up. Conference realignment truly never seems to end and at this point it’s becoming difficult to remember who is exactly in what conference.

What 12-team college football playoff would look like in 2021

ESPN recently wrote what a 12-team College Football Playoff would look like in 2021. College football fans for years have been clamoring for an expansion of the current four-team system and a 12-team playoff would create even more excitement for players, coaches, media and fans.

One thing is for certain, it’s going to be exciting to see if the Pac-12 actually scraps both divisions and how many other conferences decide to follow suit.
