ESPN’s Rece Davis is one of the very best at what he does. A master of his craft, there are very few hosts of college football and college basketball television shows in the world that can do it quite like Davis has over the past several years on ESPN’s College Gameday. The highly popular ESPN TV personality recently sat down with Kelly Gramlich and Eric Mac Lain on the Gramlich and Mac Lain podcast to talk about some of his favorite celebrity guest pickers over the years on ESPN’s highly popular college football show, which has become appointment television for college football fans across America for nearly three decades.

“Celebrity pickers, Keegan-Michael Key, Ken Jeong was amazing, and [Matthew] McConaughey. I mean, Ken Jeong’s line, which I’m afraid to repeat. Because his wife’s last name could be misconstrued. If you don’t know what I mean just go back and watch the Michigan State pick and we were all like, ‘woah, what.’ And he goes, ‘wait, ESPN, what are you talking about? It’s her name. It’s her last name.’ So, it was pretty funny but he’s such a good dude and he was great. And I love Keegan. Keegan’s been great over the years. He’s done some really cool stuff for us, including, he did his James Franklin,” Davis said.

“It’s uncanny and he did it so well that we were at Times Square doing the show for New York City and Keegan was a guest picker for that day. And he came and he did something. I think they were playing Iowa. And he basically trash talked Iowa. James [Franklin] had to do the postgame press conference and say I didn’t say that. [Laughs]…It was awesome. I loved it,” Davis said.

Then, Kelly Gramlich asked Davis if he refers to Matthew McConaughey as the “Minister of Culture” every time he’s around him. The College GameDay host then said while he knows McConaughey, he doesn’t spend that much time with him outside of work.

[Kirk] Herbstreit’s a big deal. He probably hangs out with McConaughey. McConaughey comes on the set, and I greet him. And he’s very kind. And very nice. That’s about the [extent of our relationship,” Davis said. “You know, he and Herbie probably go and hang somewhere afterward being the rockstars that they are.”

College GameDay announced that they will be on site for the highly anticipated Week 1 matchup between Notre Dame and Ohio State. Kickoff for that one is set for 7:30 PM EST at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
