ESPN’s Rece Davis doesn’t want to hear any more nonsense from <a href="https://www.on3.com/teams/lsu-tigers/">LSU</a> coach <a href="https://www.on3.com/rivals/coach/lane-kiffin-135051/">Lane Kiffin.</a> He’d rather the coach, who just left a playoff bound <a href="https://www.on3.com/teams/ole-miss-rebels/">Ole Miss</a>, be a little more upfront.



“Look, I wish him success. He’s neither friend nor enemy. He’s a coach that we cover. I wish him success, because these guys put a lot into it, and he does too, but I don’t need to hear any more about pouring into young people,” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tf56Ko4aq4">Davis said on </a><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tf56Ko4aq4">The College GameDay Podcast</a>. “I don’t need to hear that. You know, this is about one thing. It’s about winning, and it’s about his career. And that’s okay, because that’s what a lot of that’s what a lot of people do in life. The three of us, on many occasions in our lives have made decisions based on our own best interest and what we perceive and believe to be the best interest of those closest to us, our families. 



“If this were about anything else, in my judgment, any coach, not just Lane, would have said, ‘Boy, I really want that LSU job. I’ve committed to these guys. I’ve poured into them. There will be another great job open someday, and maybe I’ll get that. Maybe that’ll be the time, or maybe they won’t.’ So it’s okay that he decided to do this. Perfectly, fine with it.” 



Davis, and many others not associated with Ole Miss, are fine with Kiffin’s freedom to do what he thinks is best for his career. He could very well excel even more with the Tigers than he did with the Rebels. But the phoniness has to go away per Davis.



“I’m also okay with LSU. LSU targeted the guy that they believe could lead them back to glory, and they went and they got him under the parameters of the whacked out sport and calendar and all that stuff that we have the calendar and the parameters, that’s what’s in place right now,” Davis said. “You abide by those rules. And LSU did nothing wrong. They went and got the guy they want, Ole Miss is the aggrieved party. They are aggrieved by lanes. But Lane had a right to do this. 



“(But) stop trying to make this about pouring into somebody. You’re trying to win games. I remember one man and these aren’t mutually exclusive, you can do this. You can do this also. You can pour into the people in your program and help them along life’s way while you’re coaching. That’s great, I mean, and you should do that. That’s what we as humans should do.”



That’s when Davis used something from his experience to describe Kiffin. He referred to former <a href="https://www.on3.com/sites/devils-illustrated/">Duke </a>coach <a href="https://www.on3.com/rivals/coach/david-cutcliffe-131249/">David Cutcliffe</a>.



“But I’ll never forget hearing a coach that I respect and admire from the standpoint of human being as much as any I’ve ever been around,” Davis said. “I remember hearing David Cutcliffe one time at one of our seminars say our No. 1 job is to develop young people. No, it’s not, no, it’s not. The No. 1 job is to win.”
