According to his contract, Amari Cooper is due back with the Dallas Cowboys next season. But a new report suggests that might not be the case.

Cooper has three years left on his deal. However, if the Cowboys opt to create more salary cap space this offseason, they could move to “part ways” with their star wide receiver, according to The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

After Dallas’ season-ending loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Cooper was asked about coming back next year.

“I don’t make those decisions,” he said, via Machota. “I honestly don’t know, but hopefully.”

In 15 games this year, Cooper had 68 receptions for 865 yards and eight touchdowns for the Cowboys. This weekend, he had six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown as Dallas fell to the 49ers 23-17 in the Wild Card round of the playoffs — ending its season.

Cooper has been with the Cowboys since 2018 when the Oakland Raiders traded him for a first-round pick. This season marked the first time he failed to reach 1,000 receiving yards since 2017.

Jerry Jones addresses Cowboys playoff window following loss

Following the Cowboys’ controversial loss to the San Francisco 49ers Sunday evening, owner Jerry Jones addressed his thoughts on his team moving forward.

“When you get this combination of players together, you need to have success,” Jones said.

The Cowboys finished the regular season 12-5 and won five of their last six games before dropping their wild card matchup against the 49ers 23-17 at home.

The game had some controversy after quarterback Dak Prescott took a rush up the middle with no timeouts left and minimal time remaining in regulation. The Cowboys hurried to the line, but there was not enough time for Prescott to spike the ball and stop the clock.

By rule, the official must touch the ball before the offense can snap it. Since Prescott and his line did not give the referee the football, the official had to fight his way through the lineman to place the ball.

The Cowboys won 12 games for the first time since 2016 when they went 13-3. A 12-win season has only happened two other times in the past decade and three times total since the turn of the century.

If the Cowboys want to win, in Jones’ eyes, it has to happen now.

“We all know how it goes in the NFL, the whole thing is set up to take away from the best and then to the ones that need improvement,” Jones said.
