Saquon Barkley seemingly can’t catch a break when it comes to the injury bug. After missing virtually the entire 2020 season with a torn ACL, he sprained his ankle as he was finally getting back into his groove.

Barkley left in the first quarter against the Dallas Cowboys, and missed last weekend’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. Now, he’s out today as the New York Giants face off against the Carolina Panthers.

However, good news could be on the way. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Barkley has a an outside chance to play in the Giants next game — a Monday Night Football matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Perhaps a little unrealistic, but Barkley should definitely be back in the gameplan by Week 9. If that’s the case, the former Penn State star would return when the Las Vegas Raiders visit MetLife Stadium.

Prior to his unfortunate injury, Barkley had accumulated 325 total yards and three scores on 68 total touches. One of those scores was extra important — a game-winning touchdown against the New Orleans Saints in overtime.

In Barkley’s stead, backup running back Devontae Booker has carried the load. Additionally, fullback Elijhaa Penny has also gotten some burn. Last weekend against the Rams, the duo combined for 20 touches, 85 total yards and a touchdown.

The NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018, Barkley looked to be on his way to being the NFL’s premier running back. However, injuries have piled up and changed the trajectory of his career. Now, the Giants sit at 1-5, desperate for the help of the former No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft.

As Saquon Barkley looks to return, he’ll be looking to return to help his team — he’s a gamer. Additionally, it could be an audition for next season, as his time in New York could be running out.
