Texas starting quarterback Hudson Card has agreed to an NIL deal with On3 affiliate Inside Texas, according to Justin Wells. The announcement comes just minutes after reports indicate Card will be the starting quarterback against Louisiana in week one.

As part of the deal, Card will join a weekly YouTube series hosted by Texas Homer throughout the season. Inside Texas will also release a camp chronicle series highlighting Card’s journey to the starting job over the past month. The series will take fans inside camp from the first practice to the final scrimmage.

Card, a redshirt freshman from Lake Travis, Texas, beat out junior Casey Thompson for the starting job. Under first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian, the new signal caller will look to lead the Longhorns to their first Big 12 title since 2009.

More about Hudson Card

Inside Texas’ new NIL partner Hudson Card arrived on campus as a four-star recruit in 2020. He was ranked the No. 2 quarterback in the class and sat behind only running back Bijan Robinson in the Texas class.

Card played in two games as a true freshman, making his collegiate debut in the 2020 season opener against UTEP. He has completed one pass for five yards in his career, adding four carries for 11 yards. Thanks to the NCAA’s four game maximum for redshirt players, Card will enter the 2021 season as a freshman.

He won the starting job over the course of camp, showing off his dual threat abilities in the new offense. Earlier this month, his rival and teammate Casey Thompson compared him to a former Longhorns quarterback who is currently playing in the NFL.

“Hud does a good job of finding his arm angles and arm slots. I don’t know if he played baseball or not, but he does a really good job of that,” Thompson said. “Similar to Shane Buechele.”

He continued: “Whether he has laces or no laces, he does a good job at that. So that’s why I really think he’s doing well right now. It’s just finding good arm angles to throw the football and getting it out.”

Buechele played well his freshman year at Texas in 2016, throwing for 21 touchdowns. However, he lost the starting job to Sam Ehlinger before eventually transferring to SMU in 2019. He finished his college career strong in the AAC, throwing for 57 touchdowns in two years.

Card will look to leave a legacy above and beyond what Buechele accomplished, also making his mark as the immediate successor to Ehlinger.
