Texas Tech guard Kevin Overton plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to a report from Tobias Bass of The Athletic. He spent just one season with the Red Raiders and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Overton initially began his college career at Drake and this will be his second transfer in as many years. He appeared in 36 games with one start this past season to average 7.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Overton played high school basketball at Sunrise Christian Academy (KS), where he was a three-star prospect. He ranked as the No. 295 overall player and No. 63 shooting guard in the 2023 cycle according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

The 6-foot-5 guard immediately cracked the starting lineup as a true freshman at Drake in 2023-24. He averaged 11.3 point and 3.3 rebounds as the Bulldogs won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament and earned a No. 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Kevin Overton is the third Texas Tech player to enter the portal this offseason, joining Devan Cambridge and Darrion Williams. The Red Raiders have also added two players through the portal and rank No. 3 in the Big 12 according to On3’s Transfer Portal Team Rankings.

Texas Tech is coming off of an Elite Eight appearance, but these recent losses will mean it needs to rebuild its roster for the 2025-26 season. Thankfully, leading scorer JT Toppin already announced his return.

The college basketball transfer portal officially opened for business on Monday, March 24, and will close on Tuesday, April 22. As of this writing, more than 1,000 players had already entered their names.

Last spring alone, 1,962 Division I players tested the portal waters. Based on the early numbers from this year, even more could follow. For the first time in history, more than half of the points scored in college basketball were scored by players from the transfer portal, not high school, in the 2024-25 season.

In data gathered over the first two years with transfer windows, the NCAA found most athletes enter the portal within the first four weeks of the portal opening. The study showed that 73% of men’s and women’s basketball undergraduate athletes entered during the first four weeks. That increased to 82% for men and 86% for women in 2024.
