Alabama safety Brian Branch is entering what is likely his last season in Tuscaloosa before heading to the next level. After two seasons as main contributor to the Tide defense, Branch is playing like a potential first-round pick for the 2023 NFL Draft.

Pro Football Focus recently broke down the perfect fits for each NFL team, naming Branch as a top candidate to go to the Cincinnati Bengals.

“Not only does the Jessie Bates III contract situation loom large over the Bengals at the moment, but Vonn Bell is also an impending free agent after 2022,” PFF writes. “Even after drafting two versatile defensive backs who can fill those spots, there’s a good chance the Bengals are looking to add to their secondary once again next offseason. Branch fills that versatile mold defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo loves — he earned a 76.1 overall grade last season and an 88.1 grade vs. the run.”

The Cincinnati Bengals have a proven high-powered offense and could match that play on the defensive side with some key additions like the Alabama star.

Branch has played in 27 games in the crimson and white, making 53 tackles and 5.5 tackles for a loss. His two career interceptions came as a freshman against the Arkansas Razorbacks and Auburn Tigers.

Branch explains how much he’s grown over the past two seasons

Head coach Nick Saban is going to have some experience in the secondary next season. With Brian Branch entering his junior season, he’ll be expected to step up in a leadership role. The defensive back has played all across the field for the Tide, ranging from cornerback, nickelback/STAR, and safety.

Branch was asked how much he has grown since arriving in Tuscaloosa and going into his third season. He cited that being able to play all three positions as a defensive back has really helped him grow as a player, especially when he was still in the learning phase.

“Between my first and second year, I feel like knowing the playing, getting the scheme, and everything because I was moving around a lot,” Branch said. “Just knowing each position really helped me. That’s all. I feel like it’s going to give me a big boost for this third year.”

He is expected to once again be a huge part of what the Crimson Tide does this season, playing all around the field.

Alabama will have two inexperienced cornerbacks making way this season, potentially a place Branch can help out. He and Malachi Moore have both played at STAR throughout their careers as well. Wherever defensive coordinator Pete Golding decides to put Branch, he will play at an elite level.
