Georgia has been considered the heavy favorite to land four-star Lakeland (Fla.) wide receiver Tyler Williams for the for the better part of four months.

The Bulldogs got the No. 46 overall prospect in the On300 on campus in March and July for unofficial visits, and also hosted him in early June for an official. But a new contender has emerged in recent weeks: Miami.

According to On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons, the Hurricanes have made a big jump up his list recently and are the main competition right now for Kirby Smart and Co.

“I still have a pick in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine for Georgia, and I feel fairly confident that Georgia’s trending here,” Simmons said during On3’s The Inside Scoop recruiting show. “But Miami has definitely closed that gap. The team that was looked at over the summer to be be Georgia’s biggest competitor was really Texas A&M, and there was talk he may be in College Station this weekend for the Miami game, but that’s been scrapped. He’ll take no trips this weekend.”

Where the rubber will really meet the road, Simmons says, is next weekend. Both Miami and Georgia play at home, and his decision is expected the following week on Sept. 27.

“I think if he takes a visit to either of those two schools, it’ll be telling,” he added. “He has already taken an OV to Georgia, but not to Miami. I think they’d love to have him on campus for an unofficial, speaking of Miami, and then get an OV with him later in the season.”

Tyler Williams Scouting Summary

“Former basketball-first athlete who blossomed as a wide receiver after transferring to powerhouse Lakeland High as a junior. Has a natural, well-rounded skill set at receiver. A big, fluid mover at around 6-foot-3, 200 pounds. Has plus length for the position with 33.5-inch arms. Draws on his basketball background to win at the catch point. High-points and attacks the ball in contested situations. Shows good lateral agility and spatial awareness as a runner after the catch. Continues to be a top basketball player, averaging over 15 points per game as a junior. Will need to continue progressing in the technical aspects of his game given his lack of football focus to this point.” — Charles Power, On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings
